Badass at Play
Surfing, climbing, camping, cycling, skiing, exploring and more. Meredith McConvill really does cover it all in her life of play. And, I also should mention that she’s also a CEO of a media company so really does her fair share of work play in all ways. Meredith is someone who I connected with through our shared passion for the cycling community (via a cool collaboration between WBR + PeopleforBikes) and a lady I ooh and awe over from afar. She truly exudes this happy, joyous spirit in all of her adventuring and I’m grateful to have her as someone who inspires me to pursue more play in my life. And, I certainly hope to meet her for a solid playdate sometime in the future - seems like a Recess Camp is in order. For now, I’ll continue to admire her from afar in her life of living Advanced Recess.
Here’s more with Meredith:
Describe a little about yourself:
Growing up in Staten Island, NY, I did not have much access to outdoor adventures off the pavement. I didn't try camping until I was 21! Then 9/11 hit, and after working for years in Manhattan, I began traveling and working around the world. Australia, Greece, Italy. Once I discovered San Diego, California though, I knew it would be home. Now I make it a habit to have at least one adventure each day.
What do you do for play?
I love grabbing my longboard and paddling out for a sunset session at Old Man's in San Diego. Or getting up at an ungodly early hour for fresh powder turns at Snowbasin in Utah. And then what I really love is feeling the granite beneath my fingertips as I place the last piece of gear and summit in Joshua Tree National Park. Then settle into camp and stir up a tasty feast with friends!
Are you able to make a living from your version of play? If so, tell us more about that.
In 2016, the gig economy was growing strong, and many outdoor adventurers were turning their side hustle into a full-time business. I was one of them, and started Top Rope Media in an effort to help athletes and outdoor brands navigate the marketing wilderness. These newfound entrepreneurs did not have a team of people to help with fundraising, email marketing, social media and web design.
Instead of simply consulting, I have taken the wheel for many of my clients, driving their marketing efforts. My outdoor adventures combined with my marketing and fundraising expertise helps both outdoor and lifestyle brands reach their customers on every step of their buying journey.
When you think of your ideal day spent playing, what is it?
With friends. Outdoors in nature. Maybe rock climbing, snowboarding, or a surf session at sunset. Then returning exhausted but happy to camp, and spending the evening reliving the day around the campfire.
Our motto is Pursue a Life of Play. In your own words, what does this mean to you? How do you live it?
I make sure to fit in play every day. Even if it's just a short run with my hound dog Lucy.
