Bicycles = Play
This is the kind of math we like doing at Advanced Recess. Equations that equal play.
That’s exactly how we feel at Advanced Recess about bikes. In addition to play, we believe…
Bikes = Education
Bikes = Healthcare
Bikes = Livelihood
Bikes = Safety
Bikes = Access
But, as the title of this post suggests, we believe that, above all else…
Bikes = Play
And, this is especially true when it comes to World Bicycle Relief, a nonprofit dedicated to distributing new, reliable, culturally appropriate bicycles into rural communities around the world where covering great distance is a significant challenge in terms of accessing education, healthcare and livelihood. Since inception in 2005, World Bicycle Relief has distributed over 500,000 bicycles to students, healthcare workers and entrepreneurs in rural parts of the world to help tackle these issues and, in the month of June, Advanced Recess is participating in their Pedal to Empower event to ensure more bicycles will be distributed to students…so they can pedal towards their dreams…and have a little fun playing along the way.
Take for instance, Ethel. Before she owned a bike, Ethel walked over two hours across hilly terrain to attend school. With a bike, her commute now takes 45 minutes. She’s happy to arrive at school on time to pursue her goal of becoming a nurse. In addition to setting an example as a successful student, Ethel has mobilized her community by using her bicycle to transport fellow classmates to school. Plus, look at her smile in the above photo…as we all know, bicycles bring a true sense of joy and a feeling that we are playing.
So, with this in mind, please join us here at Advanced Recess in the month of June as we support World Bicycle Relief. It’s easy to participate:
For each sweatshirt sold: Advanced Recess will donate $8 to WBR.
For each frisbee sold: we will donate $3 to WBR.
After all, what’s better than time spent playing? Oh, yes…time spent playing while making a difference in the lives of others.
