Words of Play

Jackson, Wyoming

Jackson, Wyoming

We want to infuse play in our lives so we live it from the moment we wake up to the second we hit the pillow. Here are some fun terms...

Javaphile - a coffee lover :)

Otium - a Latin abstract term, has a variety of meanings, including leisure time in which a person can enjoy eating, playing, resting, contemplation and academic endeavors.

Meraki - The concept of undivided attention applied to tasks - usually creative or artistic. An introspective, precise expression of care and love.

Hygge - A Danish word for a mood of coziness and contentment

Solarfri - Icelandic tradition of taking a day off from work to enjoy the sun

Uitwaaien - the Dutch practice of jogging or walking into the wind, especially in the winter, for the purpose of feeling invigorated while relieving stress and boosting one’s general health.

Futaleufu - This is actually a town and river in Chile but I think it’s fun to say and thinking of the river alway opens my mind up to a spirit of play. The Futaleufu is one of two rivers to cross the Argentina-Chile border. Locals who live along the valley where the Futaleufu sits call it “"un paisaje pintado por Dios" meaning a landscape painted by God. Our natural playground...what a gift it is!

Arbejdsglaede (pronounced ah-bides-glull) is a Danish word that describes their attitude towards work. It literally means “happiness at work” which is an essential part of Scandinavian living. Find yourself some of this each day!

Kalsarikannit - a Finish term for drinking at home in your underwear with no intention of going out. Perhaps Finish in regular times but a worldwide constant during a pandemic:)

Vocabulary and words are play in themselves! Challenge yourself to learn a new word each day. Not only will it expand your vocabulary but it’ll expand your mind...and that’s play at its best!
