Play-and-Seek
Curiosity and an open mind are certainly two qualities that define someone who excels at Advanced Recess and both of these traits come to mind when I think of Emily Mullen. Like some other rad people I’ve featured here at Advanced Recess, I met Emily through World Bicycle Relief and then had the good fortune to work with her on several projects for WBR over the next few years. The back story on that is that her open mind towards meeting people and trying something new, led her to an event we were hosting for WBR in Boulder which also exposed her to the world of Zwift where she then worked for several years. Emily and I were able to team up on some really cool projects in her time at Zwift and, this past year when I decided to bring Advanced Recess to life, Emily was someone I knew I could count on for advice, connections and continued inspiration to be open-minded and curious as part of life’s journey.
So, with that in mind, here’s a huge thanks to Emily for reminding me that seeking is both joyful and playful…and certainly a key ingredient towards excelling at Advanced Recess.
Here’s more with Emily:
What do you do for play?
Reading, crossword-ing, swim/bike/running and playing along with Jeopardy contestants at home. Oh and baking!
How does play motivate you in your life?
I feel better through the activities I choose for play - stronger and smarter mostly.
When you think of your ideal day spent playing, what is it?
A sunrise swim in Lake Michigan, homemade waffles for breakfast with my family, a post-breakfast family walk, a bit of down time to read, afternoon bike ride - either solo or with the family, delicious dinner and cap it off with a walk to our favorite ice cream parlor.
Our motto is Pursue a Life of Play. In your own words, what does this mean to you? How do you live it?
