UpCycle and UpPlay….

One of our primary goals at Advanced Recess is to share the stories of people around the world who lead passion-based, playful lives. We believe that the sense of passion is a shared language of humanity and that it can bring us together in many ways.

We will start sharing these stories in the weeks to come but, for now, here is a glimpse of one of our favorites.

Meet Attila Magyar, a 6th generation leather worker, 1st generation up-cycler who lives in Ireland and is the Managing Director of Mamukko. Mamukko is a passion-based business that transforms ocean race sails and decommissioned life rafts into unique, limited-edition bags and accessories.

What do you do for play?

Using sewing machines, cutting up decommissioned life rafts and ( ocean race ) sails for bag parts.

Are you able to make a living from your version of play?

Yes. Feel grateful to be able to run my own business with my lovely wife based on my family heritage. I am a 6th generation leather worker, 1st generation upcycler. Our company will be 10 next year. We transform ocean race sails and decommissioned liferafts into unique limited edition bags and accessories. This is what I love and enjoy doing. Our workshop and workshop shop is a real playground.

How does play motivate you in your life?

Could not do something I don’t enjoy or something that is not playful. Enjoy doing positive things that benefits the Earth. Play and passion keeps me going, is the wind in my sails.

When you think of your ideal day spent playing, what is it?

Opening up a freshly received ocean race sail and cutting it up for bags having some intervals fixing some sewing machines while playing vinyls ( records ) on my sound system. How could it get even better?
